Cupid definitely hit his mark in Saugerties. Although the festivities of February 14 will be another heart-festooned happy memory by the time this publication hits newsstands, the love shared between these Saugerties sweethearts will be felt the whole year through.

The Bischoffs

Fitness has not only helped maintain Gary and Marge Bischoff physically, but their shared love of staying active has contributed to the health and strength of their marriage as well.
The pair met at an adrenaline pumping event, an international dance on 86th Street in New York City in January 1965. "It was like a scene from a movie when she walked in, I instantly saw her" - Gary paused, re-enacting the moment - "and no one else."
He asked her to dance and soon the couple waltzed down the aisle together.
After the pair moved to Saugerties in the early 1970s, there were even more opportunities to enjoy their active lifestyle.
"We both love the outdoors," said Marge. "We like outdoor sports, running, skiing, bicycle and kayaking. You look forward to doing those things together."
Both are avid road racers, but recently they've heard the siren song of the Hudson and jump into their kayak at the slightest opportunity. "Right now I'm building a double kayak," said Gary, adding jokingly, "The rule is on the water, I'm the boss, I'm the captain, but the rest of the time, she's the boss, she's the captain."
Laughing, Marge countered, "You have to give in a lot [in a marriage]. If you want something and you keep harping on it, you end up getting it in a different way, not a good way. Gary used to say it's give 90 [percent] and take ten. If you look at it that way it works out a lot better and you get a lot more than ten."
Indeed, it has seen the couple through thick and thin.
"Marge is a lot of my strength; when I was convicted of that violation, I was flat on my back. I wasn't going to run again," said Gary. (Bischoff was convicted of harassment last year in connection with a 2004 altercation with attorney John Greco. Bischoff has denied hitting Greco.) "She wouldn't let me quit. She said 'You have to run again, you can't let those liars make you back down' and she said it so forcefully I had to, even though it would have been easy to walk away then."
"You can't hold a grudge you have to get over it," Marge agreed. "You have to be willing to work toward a solution. You have to work together. That way you end up with a better solution."
